The Pit Diver Queen of Amber

I’ll be honest. I did get to play this character for a weekend, whose name is, oddly enough, Petra. I only just remembered that when I dug out her character sheet this past weekend. I’ll have to rename her should I ever get to play her again.

One of my favorite characters ever was a slightly off center Amber worshipping Pit Diver. She found Deirdre’s Trump deck on one dive after Patternfall and it set her off. When I say she was an Amber worshiper I’m stating it mildly. She was obsessed. She was also mercenary. She made a small fortune taking fellow worshipers off to her shadow version of Amber, complete with shadows of the Elders, her own JoJ artifact (inexpensive little bauble actually. Held weather spells), her own Unicorn ( little more costly than the Joj) and even held a broken Pattern in the basement of the castle. Strange things went on in Shadow Amber, especially after it was upgraded to a Shadow of Desire.

She also managed to actually get to Amber proper by using a place Trump from Deirdre’s deck that took her to an apartment in town where, it turned out, Deirdre met her occasional lover. Our Pit Diver took it over, made an identity for herself in Amber, and proceeded to make friends with chambermaids and pages from the castle. Who would, on occasion, bring her things from the castle: the odd earring lost by Flora in one of the many sitting rooms, a hankie of Fi’s, a pair of old boots Caine was throwing out, an arrow from Julian’s childhood quiver. She paid well, and she could afford to because the artifacts she sold to her fellow worshipers brought a hefty price.

Sometimes she would come completely unhinged and decide she was Queen of Amber and go hole up in her shadow. There was more than one irritating Chaosites in a very confused state in her dungeons and more than one of the children of Amber spent a few strange days in what they thought was home. The people of Chaos were convinced the Amber Royals were trying to pull something and the Amberites were convinced everyone in Chaos was quite mad.

  1. As I have told you in chat–I think a good use for your Pit Diver is to make her a focus NPC for a scenario or one shot.

I know how I would plot it out, but I am sure you can see the obvious possibilities…

  2. Oh, I know. But she was great fun as a PC, undermining without knowing it the treaty negotiations between Amber and Chaos.

See, the GM didn’t reallly want to run Amber that weekend, but he finally said “OK! Fine! But you’re all from Chaos!” Well, I don’t like playing stuffy Chaosites, and I had just started playing in a PBEM with a Pit Diver among the cast, and the idea intrigued me, and so…. we were off.
